Shameful Milestones

Sometime this afternoon, the world will bypass the ONE MILLION dead mark for COVID-19. The United States accounts for 209,230 of them — we account for a full 21%. Yet we only have 4% of the world’s population.

Sadly, we have what appears to be 90% of the world’s stupidest people in charge of, and living in, our country.

Nearly seven months into this pandemic, I would love to be sitting here typing about wonderful, positive milestones — lower infection rates, deaths significantly down, predictions for deaths at an all time low. I cannot.

Where we stand is shameful, frightening, an abomination.

We still average over 1,000 dead per day.

Friday, we charted over 55,000 new cases.

After having trended downward in August and early September, daily cases are rising in over half of US states. Several states have been setting and breaking records this past week.

The latest findings from scientists in Houston last week produced a study of more than 5,000 genetic sequences of the coronavirus that reveals the virus’s continual accumulation of mutations, one of which may have made it more contagious.

The latest data published in the medical journal, The Lancet, shows that the majority of Americans have not yet been exposed. In fact, the estimate is that only 9% have, so any thoughts of “herd immunity” are still 40+% away and hundreds of thousands of dead.

It’s not just old people that become infected and/or die. Seriously, stop with this bullshit. The latest report — you know, using actual DATA, shows:

During June–August 2020, COVID-19 incidence was highest in persons aged 20–29 years, who accounted for >20% of all confirmed cases. Younger adults likely contribute to community transmission of COVID-19. Across the southern United States in June 2020, increases in percentage of positive SARS-CoV-2 test results among adults aged 20–39 years preceded increases among those aged ≥60 years by 4–15 days.

Oh, well it only kills people with underlying conditions. Again, is this the fairy tale you read to yourself at night to sleep better? You know how many people have “underlying conditions”? Do you know if YOU have one? The vast majority of people do not know they have something underlying until it presents itself because of something else, LIKE COVID. Yes, if you are overweight, sure, you can see that. But how about conditions that just sit all curled up and cozy inside you ticking away like a bomb? How about conditions like being Black? Hispanic? Indigent? Human?

Yes, being a human is an underlying condition — a pre-existing condition — because we are a collection of pieces and parts that rely on one another to do their jobs in harmony. And all it takes is one piece of the organic human puzzle to short circuit and BOOM.

We have a cheese colored conman flying across the country encouraging thousands of his cult followers to come masturbate his ego. In close quarters. Maskless. And for what? Last night, less than 40 days from the 2020 election in which he is running against Joe Biden, he was still droning on about Hillary Clinton and encouraging the crowd to chant “Lock her up!”

Many Republican governors have taken a “Ehhhh, fuck it” stance and are throwing everything open again. I am stymied at Florida — on the same day their death toll breached 14,000 people (14,081) — DeSantis used his pen to allow bars and restaurants to operate at full capacity.

I get it — JOBS. But when this goes badly, and it will, what happens to those jobs? What happens to the waiter who contracts COVID and cannot work for two weeks (allowing he weathers the storm ok)? How about the line cook banging out the food? Five days in he tests positive. Then one by one the entire kitchen staff tests positive. How about the customers? Joe PubliQ eats his wings and drinks his beer. Oops, two days later he starts coughing, bad headache. He gets tested. It comes back positive. But he has already infected 25 other people.

Every expert is warning that we are headed for a horrific fall and winter because of our behavior. There is nothing else to blame it on. BEHAVIOR.

Bad behavior in the White House. An administration that got wood at the thought it was only going to decimate blue states so they sat back and laughed. A presidential cosplayer who professes to know more than generals, doctors, epidemiologists, scientists of all kinds. In reality, he knows nothing, Jon Snow, and this country is being decimated because of President Dunning Kruger.

Bad behavior in the governors’ mansions. More interested in currying favor with the boufanted baboon than in protecting their constituents, they have added to the mixed messages, carefree attitudes, and conspiracy theories.

Bad behavior in Congress and the Senate. Legislators who religiously refused to wear masks around their colleagues, then popping up positive. Stacks of bills sitting on the desk of Bitch McConnell, including the ones that would provide aid to the badly hurting public. Another 870,000 people filed for unemployment last week. Rents are due again in five days. Food pantries are drying up. They refuse to move quickly to help Americans, but RBG is not even in the ground yet and they are sprinting to get a new SC Justice in place.

Bad behavior on the TV and online — FOX, OANN, Breitbart, The Federalist, Blaze, Facebook, 8kun — help me out here. If it’s a hoax, a liberal plot, a George Soros-Bill Gates conspiracy to control you — why do we need a vaccine? Why did you hawk hydroxychloroquine for a hoax? Your hero says it’s going away on its own “like a miracle.” Masks are stupid. It’s a hoax. Yet he then turns around and starts bragging about circumventing the FDA to get a vaccine to you as quickly as possible. For what?

Bad behavior by the public. We see it daily, video after video of people losing their minds over mask requirements. We pass by maskless people, people who wear it on their chin like a fabric beard. People congregating together in large groups for parties, holidays, weddings. And then like clockwork, up goes the case rates. Up goes the death count.

I remember when Jim Jones led 918 of his devoted followers to their deaths in Guyana. 918 American citizens brainwashed, believing only him, trusting him implicitly, buying his bullshit wholesale. When the pictures from above of the massive death site made their way to TV and print in the states, we were all horrified. 918 people. The bodies covering a huge area, and recovery workers discovering the area could have been wider, but many of the dead were laying on top of many more of the dead. 918. We could now fill two football stadiums with our dead and nothing is being done. People go about their days like nothing is happening, that it’s all fine. This country is literally the dog in the fire meme. Where is the outrage, the horror, the demand for something to be done?

We could have sacrificed. We could have come together as a strong, committed nation, a nation that could have led the world by example, a nation that could have flattened the curve, bought us time to find a vaccine, a nation that could have dipped into the coffers and financially supported its citizens as we rode out the worst.

We could have.

But because we are a nation of spoiled brats, being led by the most petulant, narcissistic, spoiled, selfish brat around — here we are. Infections rising, death toll unfathomable, struggling to stay afloat financially, healthcare being threatened by the very administration who should be protecting it, and no end in sight. I would say we could do better, but in order for that to happen, we would all have to be better. And we’re just not willing.

REFRESH. 1,000,341 dead worldwide.

It did not even take an hour.

There is no cure for COVID, but there is one for stupidity. Sadly, you can bring a MAGAt to data, but you cannot make him think.
